The best product route is determined by what already exists and what the buyer is asking to change. Four labels are useful only when they are applied consistently.
1. Standard / production-ready
Select the existing product configuration and discuss availability, order quantity and delivery planning. This route is appropriate when the current product already fits the intended program.
2. ODM / private label
Start from an existing product platform and review branding, artwork, finish, color or packaging changes. The underlying platform exists; the buyer is adapting it for a brand, collection or program.
3. OEM / build-to-print
Provide a completed customer design, technical drawing, specification or approved sample. Manufacturing is reviewed against the buyer’s defined input. OEM is not the same as factory-led design development.
4. Full ODM development
Bring an idea, commercial opportunity, sketch or reference direction. The product concept, engineering choices and production route need to be developed through a staged project review.
How to decide quickly
If you have selected a product and need a logo, start with private label. If you own the completed design, begin with OEM build-to-print. If the product itself needs new thinking, dimensions, structure or function, begin a Full ODM conversation. When unsure, send the brief and state what is fixed versus exploratory.
